Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia’s flagship company. Infamous for the highest number of air incidents in its history, including the 2014 Malaysian Boeing disaster. The carrier has been undergoing a major fleet renovation since 2015. Half of the company’s shares are owned by the state.

History of Malaysia Airlines

The first Malaysian airlines began to appear in the southern principalities in the 1920s, but they served only local flights. The all-federal Malaysia Airline Systems was formed in 1947. The carrier was officially based in Liverpool and served the British colonies in southeast Asia. Some of the aircraft were from the British passenger fleet previously based in India.

In 1972, the lines were partially privatized and began operating scheduled flights around the world. After the 1990s, when the Asian financial crisis hit, Malaysia Airlines lagged behind other SEA carriers. Between 1997 and 2013 became the world leader in incidents, becoming the most unsafe national carrier in the world. In 2014, bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against Malaysia Airlines.

In 2015, the airlines were revived by the state. Immediately after, a large-scale renovation and updating of safety standards began. Today, the carrier manages to successfully compete with regional low-cost carriers, mainly from Vietnam and Thailand.

The old fleet has undergone a large-scale renovation since 2015. All previous Boeing-737s have been sold or scrapped, and new Airbus models are gradually replacing the aircraft.

Flight directions

After a major renovation in 2015, Malaysia Airlines does not operate flights to Russian Federation “for security reasons”. Flights to Kuala Lumpur are operated via Istanbul or Doha. The most popular destinations are Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Oceania. Among the unusual ones, the airline flies to Madagascar, which is usually bypassed by other carriers due to its remoteness.

The company has a classic division into three classes: economy, business and business suite class.
